Dom placement/cloudview question

There is a player near me who quit but still has 1 dom set up and as you can imagine it is messing with my harvests. Sometimes cloudview will show it when I'm harvesting and other times it is just out of view. My question is, is that how it determines how many gateways are controlled via cloudview? Based on your location and what it is letting you see at that moment? So, say I have 3 gateways in view, it will count it as 3 gateways controlled, but if i move a little and it shows that dom off in the distance from the player who no longer plays, it will count as 4? I dont enjoy abcs but lately ive been triggering them and telling the ojs to go SE to the dom off in the distance but they are lazy. I know I can use that dom to my advantage when harvesting but it is rather obnoxious, i never know if i have 4 gw controlled or if that dom off in the distance is gonna bump it to 5 gw controlled and run the risk of abc. Im sure this topic is in the forums a million times but I dont have it in me right now to sift through all the posts. Any help would be appreciated.

It's been my experience that it is each dominator itself that has a range that is affected by allied gates within that range, not what you see, but what the dominator sees.

So you're thinking that you could drop a dom on one gateway, harvest and have it count for 4 gw, destruct that same dom, drop it again and it happens to be placed a few feet gloser to another gateway/doms, and it may count for 5 gateways? I think you're right/think thats happened to me before and I just never put 2 and 2 together until you just said it like that. Thanks a bunch.

Yep, the gate harvest bonus is determined by the dom's location. When I am not sure if a dom is seeing 4 or 5 gateways, I leap to all cardinal sides of the dom itself (NSEW) and check cloudview for each side.

If you use an architect's tools like a map (e.g. google maps) and a compass, then you can determine the exact position of your nearby gateways and will find that there is a specific radius within which a dom "sees" a GW.
I'm pretty sure that this radius is exactly 2km.

I,ve experimented alot with this and believe I understand it well.
The number of conquered gateways in range is determined by the dominator placement, yes. Warp around until yoiu are on top of that dominator (or as close as you can be) and then go to cloud view. What you see there is the number of gateways the dominator considers conquered when it is harvested, to (partially - see below)* determine its harvest amount. I regularly set up 6 dominators on 6 gateways so that no dominator is in range of more than 4 conquered gateways, which maximises the energy gained withour summoning a superbeacon *(as more dominators on a gateway reduce each one's harvest potential).
