If you are out and about, feel free to click off your phone to conserve battery power. You will stay in the game unless you switch to another app.
Also, I've noticed that if your spell writer is open, that you don't recover mana(correct me if I'm wrong).
Try to know exactly how much mana you are using so you don't have to use a potion to finish off someone.

You do recover mana while the rune pane is open, I oftentimes hold my spell while I wait for that last bit of mana midfight =p
